Failed the Louisiana Life & Health Exam? Retake Rules, Waiting Periods and Fees (2026)
The Short Answer
Failing is not the end of the road. PSI's Louisiana candidate bulletin says: there is no limit to the number of times you may take an examination if you fail during the one-year period it describes. There is no mandatory course to complete before trying again, because Louisiana has had no pre-licensing requirement for these exams since June 3, 2022.
The Waiting Period
You cannot retake the exam on the same day you failed. A candidate who fails on a Wednesday may call the next day and retest as soon as the following day, subject to seat availability at a test center.
The bulletin does not spell out exactly what starts and ends the one-year period it mentions, so confirm the details with PSI when you reschedule rather than assuming.
What Each Attempt Costs
Every attempt is a new exam fee:
- Life (Series 101): $36.00
- Health and Accident or Sickness (Series 102): $36.00
- Life, Health and Accident or Sickness, combined (Series 103): $58.00
Exam fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable. To avoid forfeiting a fee when you need to move an appointment, cancel or reschedule at least 2 days before the exam date. For a Monday appointment, that means notice by the previous Saturday.
How Long a Pass Stays Valid
Once you pass, three separate clocks matter, and they run independently:
- Exam score: valid for one year from the exam date.
- Fingerprint results: valid for 90 days.
- Application package: the form, fees, passing scores, fingerprints and all supporting documents must be complete within 90 days of submission, or the file is subject to closure.
The license application fee is $75, and it is the same whichever combination of lines you apply for on one application. First-time resident applicants also pay $60.75 for fingerprinting.
If a License Lapses Later
A different kind of retake can arrive years down the road. If a license lapses, the same license can be reinstated within two years of its expiration by completing continuing education and paying the fees due. Beyond two years, you must qualify as for a new license. With no pre-licensing course to fall back on, that functionally means passing the exam again.
What to Do Differently the Second Time
Published data do not report how repeat takers perform, so there is no number to quote. The sensible approach is simply to change what you did.
- Find the weak block. Use topic practice sets to see whether the problem was Louisiana regulation, policy provisions, annuities or the health side.
- Study the state law precisely. Free look versus the replacement refund right and the guaranty association limits are exactly the kind of detail that decides close scores.
- Practise timed. The exam gives 120 minutes for 100 questions on the single-line exams and 160 minutes for 150 on the combined one.
- Do not rebook the next morning on impulse. A few focused days beat an immediate repeat of the same preparation.
