Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Louisiana Life & Health Exam? (2026)
The Short Answer: No
Louisiana does not require a pre-licensing course for either the Life or the Accident and Health or Sickness line of authority, and it has not since June 3, 2022. You can register for the exam and sit it without completing a single classroom hour first.
What Changed and Where It Is Written
The requirement was repealed by Act No. 273 of the 2022 Regular Session (House Bill 545), which the Governor signed with an effective date of June 3, 2022. Section 2 of the act repeals the prelicensing provisions, including R.S. 22:1545(C). Today, R.S. 22:1545 shows Subsection C as repealed by Acts 2022, No. 273, effective June 3, 2022. What remains in that section is the 70 percent passing-score rule.
PSI's own Louisiana candidate bulletin agrees: there are no prelicensing requirements for all examinations except Public Adjuster and Bail Bond. Those two lines of authority are unrelated to a Life or Health and Accident or Sickness license.
A word of caution if you search the web: an older Department of Insurance guide titled Becoming a Licensed Producer, dated May 2013, is still online and describes 40-hour and 20-hour course requirements. It is stale and wrong for today. Do not rely on it.
What You Do Need Instead
With the course gone, the path to a Louisiana Life and Health license is short:
- Pass the PSI exam. Life or Health and Accident or Sickness is $36 each, the combined exam is $58, and the passing score is 70% raw. See the exam format.
- Get fingerprinted. First-time resident applicants complete a fingerprint-based background check, $60.75, collected at the appointment. Nonresidents are not required to, and neither is an already-licensed resident who is only adding a line of authority.
- Submit the application. The fee is $75 regardless of how many lines of authority you request on that application.
Keep the clocks in mind: your exam score is valid for one year, fingerprints for 90 days, and the application must be complete within 90 days of submission. Because remote testing ended on July 8, 2024, the exam itself is taken at a PSI test center.
Our verified estimate for the combined route is $193.75 ($58 exam, $75 application, $60.75 fingerprints), not counting any electronic filing fee whose amount we could not confirm. Taking Life and Health and Accident or Sickness as two separate exams comes to $207.75.
