The Format at a Glance

PSI Services LLC administers the Louisiana Department of Insurance producer exams. For this license there are three exams to choose from: a Life exam, a Health and Accident or Sickness exam, and a combined Life, Health and Accident or Sickness exam.

Life (Series 101): 100 questions, 120 minutes, $36 per attempt.

Health and Accident or Sickness (Series 102): 100 questions, 120 minutes, $36 per attempt.

Life, Health and Accident or Sickness, combined (Series 103): 150 questions, 160 minutes, $58 per attempt.

The exam is computer-administered and shows one question at a time. Before it starts you get an untimed 15-minute tutorial on how the screen works.

Scored and Unscored Questions

The question counts above are the scored questions. PSI's candidate bulletin says a small number, 5 to 10, of experimental questions may also be administered. They are not scored, but they do count against your examination time, and the posted time limits already allow for them. You are not told which questions are experimental, so treat every question as if it counts.

The Passing Score

The passing score is 70% correct. It is a raw percentage, matching the language in R.S. 22:1545(A), which says a candidate passes by achieving a score of at least seventy percent. It is not a scaled score, so there is no conversion step and no hidden curve. The same 70% bar applies to all three exams.

What the Health and Accident or Sickness Exam Covers

The Health and Accident or Sickness outline has ten sections, also totalling 100%:

  • Licensing and Regulation (Federal Regulation): 1%
  • General Insurance Concepts: 7%
  • Life, Health, and Accident Insurance Basics: 14%
  • Types of Life Insurance Policies: 8%

All three outlines carry an effective date of February 10, 2016 printed on every page. Each outline cites Louisiana statute and Administrative Code section numbers next to the topics it covers.

Which Exam Should You Take?

If you want both lines of authority, the combined exam costs $58. Taking Life and Health and Accident or Sickness separately costs $72 ($36 twice), so the combined exam saves $14. The Louisiana license application fee is $75 regardless of how many lines of authority you request on one application, so the exam choice is where the difference in cost lies.
