How Many Questions Are on the Kansas Life & Health Exam? Format, Time Limit and Passing Score (2026)

4 min read|Updated 2026-10-29

The Short Answer

The combined Kansas Life and Accident & Health producer exam (Pearson exam code 12-KS-05) has 154 items: 140 scored and 14 unscored pretest items. You get 150 minutes, the exam fee is $64 and the passing score is 70%. It is given in person at a Pearson VUE test center.

The Format at a Glance

ExamScored itemsPretest itemsTotalTimeFee
Life and Accident & Health (12-KS-05)14014154150 minutes$64
Life only (12-KS-01)84119590 minutes$57
Accident & Health only (12-KS-02)84119590 minutes$57

Pretest items are unscored: they sit on the exam but do not count toward your result. Pearson's content outline prints the totals itself, for example "140 scored questions plus 14 pretest questions" for the combined exam. Treat every item as if it counts.

Kansas treats the combined exam and the two single-line exams as interchangeable options. A candidate who wants only one line of authority can sit only that exam, while the combined exam covers both lines in one sitting.

What the Combined Exam Covers

Pearson's Kansas content outline, effective March 1, 2025, divides the 140 scored items into twelve sections:

SectionScored items
I. Life policy types (whole life, universal, variable and indexed life, term, annuities, combination plans)15
II. Life provisions, riders, options and exclusions15
III. Completing the application, underwriting and delivering the policy12
IV. Retirement and other insurance concepts8
V. Accident and health policy types (disability income, AD&D, medical expense, Medicare supplement, group, long-term care, other)16
VI. Policy provisions, clauses and riders15
VII. Social insurance (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security)6
VIII. Other insurance concepts5
IX. Field underwriting procedures8
X. Kansas statutes and regulations common to all lines18
XI. Kansas statutes and regulations pertinent to life insurance only11
XII. Kansas statutes and regulations pertinent to health insurance only11

The nine general-knowledge sections add up to 100 items. The three Kansas law sections add up to 40, or 28.6% of the exam.

The Passing Score

The passing score is 70%. Pearson's candidate handbook says so, and K.A.R. 40-7-13(c) independently provides that a person who fails to score at least 70 percent on any examination has failed it. It is a raw percentage, not a scaled score.

On the combined exam, 70% of 140 scored items is 98 correct answers, so you can miss 42. On a single-line exam, 70% of 84 is 58.8, so you need 59 correct. The combined exam produces one score for the whole sitting, with no separate pass mark for the life half and the health half.

Time per Item

150 minutes for 154 items is about 58 seconds per item. A single-line exam allows 90 minutes for 95 items, about 57 seconds each. Candidates for whom English is a second language can request 1.5 times the normal time, which makes the combined exam 225 minutes; it needs a pre-approved letter from an instructor or employer. The combined exam is also offered in Spanish, at test centers only.
