Kansas Life & Health Exam Day: What to Expect at Pearson VUE (2026)

4 min read|Updated 2026-10-29

Quick Overview

Your Kansas Life and Accident & Health exam is taken in person at a Pearson VUE test center. Pearson's Kansas insurance page takes reservations for physical test centers only, so there is no at-home or online-proctored option. You get 150 minutes for 154 items (140 scored, 14 unscored pretest items), and you need 70% of the scored items to pass.

Booking Your Appointment

Reserve through Pearson's Kansas insurance page (pearsonvue.com/us/en/ks/insurance.html) or by calling Pearson at (888) 204-6255. The combined exam costs $64; a single-line exam costs $57. Pearson's Kansas test centers are in Hays, Overland Park, Topeka and Wichita, with more Kansas testing locations at Emporia, Independence, Fort Riley, Pittsburg, Garden City and Salina. You may also test at any Pearson VUE test center in the US.

To change or cancel without forfeiting your fee, call Pearson at least 48 hours before the exam. You can apply for your license before the exam or after you pass, so the order is yours to choose.

What to Bring: Two Forms of ID

Pearson requires two forms of current ID that carry your signature, and the identification must be in English.

  • Primary ID: government-issued, with a photo and a signature. Accepted: a driver's license, U.S. Department of State driver's license, learner's permit with photo and signature, national, state or country ID card, passport, passport card, military ID, military dependent ID, or Alien Registration (Green Card).
  • Secondary ID: anything that bears a valid signature: a U.S. Social Security card, a debit or credit card, or any item from the primary list.

Pearson recognizes no grace period for an expired ID, so check both expiry dates a week ahead, not the night before.

Spanish and Extra Time

The combined exam is also offered in Spanish. Choose the language when you make your reservation; Spanish exams are available at test centers only, and you can switch between Spanish and English at any time during the exam. Candidates for whom English is a second language can request 1.5 times the normal time, which turns 150 minutes into 225. That accommodation needs a pre-approved letter from an instructor or employer and is separate from the Spanish option.

Pacing the Clock

150 minutes for 154 items is about 58 seconds per item, so you should be through roughly half of the items (77) at the 75-minute mark. If an item stalls you, choose your best answer and keep moving: three minutes on one item is the time of three. Answer every item, and treat all 154 as scored, since the 14 pretest items do not count toward your result.

Check-In and Test Center Rules

Pearson sets the test center rules, and they can change, so this guide sticks to what Pearson and the Kansas Department of Insurance (KDOI) publish for Kansas candidates. For anything else, such as what may go into the testing room, read Pearson's current Kansas Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook (publication 121700, dated July 2026) before you go. The night before, put your two IDs, your reservation details and the route to the center where you can find them, and leave enough time that check-in is never rushed.

Your Result and What Comes Next

The exam is scored against a single 70% cut score for the whole sitting: 98 of the 140 scored items.

  • If you pass: your score is valid for two years from the exam date. Apply to KDOI: the application fee is $10 in 2026 (set each year by the commissioner), plus a $60 background check processing fee for fingerprints. KDOI's Topeka office and six Department of Children and Families locations take fingerprints at no cost, and Pearson offers digital fingerprinting for $20 at its Overland Park, Topeka and Wichita test centers, booked separately from the exam.
  • If you fail: you can retake the exam after at least seven calendar days, with no limit on attempts. See the retake rules.
