Failed the Kansas Life & Health Exam? Retake Rules, Waiting Periods and Fees (2026)
The Short Answer
You can retake the Kansas Life and Accident & Health exam as many times as you need: there is no limit on attempts. After a failed attempt you must wait at least seven calendar days before retaking it, and at least 24 hours before you can schedule the new appointment. Budget for the exam fee again: $64 for the combined exam, $57 for a single-line exam.
Failing is common. About four in ten candidates did not pass the combined exam in 2025, according to NAIC data.
Two Waiting Periods, Not One
Pearson's candidate handbook sets two separate waits, and people often remember only the shorter one:
- 24 hours before you may schedule an appointment to retest.
- Seven calendar days before you may actually retake the exam after failing it.
The seven days decide the date of the retest itself. Being allowed to book after 24 hours does not let you sit the exam any sooner. Pearson words the seven-day rule as its current policy, so check the handbook when you book.
Attempt Limits, Fees and Cancellations
The handbook is explicit: "There is no limit on the number of times a candidate may take an examination." Exam fees are non-refundable and non-transferable except under Pearson's change and cancel policy. To move or cancel an appointment without forfeiting the fee, call Pearson at least 48 hours before the exam.
If you miss an appointment because of illness, a death in the immediate family, a disabling traffic accident, a court appearance or jury duty, military duty or a weather emergency, you can request an exception within 14 days of the missed date, with supporting documentation. Exam vouchers are available; they expire 12 months after issue and are non-refundable.
How Long a Passing Score Lasts
If you pass, the Kansas Department of Insurance (KDOI) says licensing test scores are valid for two years from the date of the examination. You may apply for your license before you sit the exam or after you pass it. The pre-licensing guide covers the application fee and fingerprints.
Is a Single-Line Exam an Easier Retake?
If you need only one line, a single-line exam is a legitimate option: 84 scored items in 90 minutes against 140 in 150. The NAIC numbers do not show it to be easier. In 2025, 48.6% of Life-only candidates and 54.0% of Accident & Health-only candidates passed, against 58.8% on the combined exam. Choose a single-line exam because it is the line you need.
What To Do Differently Before You Retake
- Use the wait as a study window. Seven days is time to work on your weakest areas, not to start over.
- Write down what felt weak while it is fresh. Note the topics that slowed you down or looked unfamiliar, then rank them by outline weight: Kansas law is 40 of 140 scored items, accident and health policy types and provisions are 31, and life policy types and provisions are 30.
- Drill by topic, then by clock. Work the free sets for your weak topics, such as Kansas life insurance law or Kansas accident & health insurance law, then do timed blocks at about 58 seconds per item.
- Rebook on evidence, not hope. Book when your practice scores sit comfortably above 70%.
