Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Arizona Life & Health Exam? (2026)

4 min read|Updated 2026-10-23

The Short Answer

No. Arizona does not require a pre-licensing course, classroom hours or a course-of-study certificate for the Life or the Accident and Health or Sickness producer license. Licensure is conditioned on passing the examination, together with age, background and fees.

What the Statutes Say

Three Arizona statutes work together:

  • A.R.S. § 20-285(B) lists exactly four conditions the director must find before approving an individual's license application: the applicant is at least eighteen years of age; has not committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension or revocation under section 20-295; has paid the fees prescribed in section 20-167; and has successfully passed the examinations for the lines of authority applied for. No fifth condition requires completed education.
  • A.R.S. § 20-284(A) says the examination tests knowledge of the lines of authority applied for, the duties and responsibilities of an insurance producer, and the insurance laws of the state. It describes what the exam covers; it does not require a course first.
  • A.R.S. § 20-286 defines the lines of authority, including Life and Accident and Health or Sickness, and attaches no education prerequisite to any of them.

PSI's Candidate Information Bulletin describes the same path, exam first and then application. It also states that the Department of Insurance does not provide study materials, cannot recommend any supplier of study materials and does not evaluate the quality of any training course or study material. It adds that candidates may obtain recommendations from insurance companies, the company or agency they plan to work for, or local insurance and agents' associations.

What Is Required Instead

RequirementDetail
AgeAt least 18
ExaminationPass the Life, Accident and Health or Sickness exam (or the single-line exams); $59 combined, or $50 for each single-line exam
FingerprintsRequired for resident applicants, through the Department's Fieldprint process: $8.25 Fieldprint fee plus $22.44 FBI processing fee, $30.69 total
License fee$120 per license class, not per line of authority

Adding these up, the all-in estimate for the combined path (combined exam, license fee and fingerprints) is $209.69, against $250.69 if you take the two single-line exams instead. Passing an exam does not guarantee a license.
