How Many Questions Are on the Arizona Life & Health Exam? Format, Time Limit and Passing Score (2026)
Three Exams, One Provider
Arizona exams are delivered by PSI. For the life and health lines you can choose between three exams, and the choice is yours:
| Exam | Items | Time limit | Fee per attempt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life Insurance Producer (Series 13-31) | 100 | 2 hours | $50 |
| Accident and Health or Sickness Insurance Producer (Series 13-32) | 100 | 2 hours | $50 |
| Life, Accident and Health or Sickness Insurance Producer (Series 13-33, combined) | 150 | 2.5 hours | $59 |
Fingerprints are required for all three paths. A candidate who wants both lines can sit the combined exam once for $59, or sit the two single-line exams for $50 each, $100 in total. The combined exam saves $41 compared with the two-exam path.
Passing Score
PSI states the passing score as 70% correct in the Score Reporting section of its Candidate Information Bulletin. The same figure applies to all three exams, and it is not split between in-person and remote testing. It is stated as a percentage of questions answered correctly.
Scored and Unscored Questions
The Bulletin says PSI may add an additional 5 to 10 experimental questions to any exam. Experimental questions are not scored. You will not be told which ones they are, so answer every question as if it counts.
What the Combined Exam Covers
The combined exam's content outline has 13 sections. PSI prints each section's weight as a percentage only; it does not print item counts for the 150-item exam, and we do not guess at them.
| Section | Weight |
|---|---|
| Insurance Regulation | 4% |
| Federal Laws and Regulations | 3% |
| General Insurance Concepts | 7% |
| Life, Accident and Health Insurance Basics | 17% |
| Types of Life Insurance Policies | 9% |
| Life Insurance Policy Provisions, Options, and Riders | 15% |
| Annuities | 7% |
| Individual Accident and Health Insurance Policy Provisions | 8% |
| Disability Income and Related Insurance | 6% |
| Medical Plans | 11% |
| Group Health Insurance | 3% |
| Specialized Health Insurance for Qualified Individuals | 5% |
| Federal Tax Considerations for Life and Health Insurance | 5% |
The weights add up to 100%. The largest single block is Life, Accident and Health Insurance Basics at 17%, followed by Policy Provisions, Options, and Riders at 15% and Medical Plans at 11%. Each section cites specific Arizona Revised Statutes and Arizona Administrative Code rules, so the outline itself is worth reading before you book.
The Single-Line Exams
Both single-line exams have exactly 100 items, and their printed percentages add up to 100%, so the percentages equal item counts directly. For example, on the Life exam (Series 13-31), Life Insurance Policy Provisions, Options, and Riders is 28% of the outline, which is 28 items. The legal-compliance content in the outline is essentially the same across all three exams, so the regulation and federal-law preparation carries over whichever one you choose.
Which Exam Should You Sit?
If you plan to hold both lines of authority, the combined exam is the simpler route: one appointment, one fee of $59, and the 41% saving over two separate $50 attempts. The single-line exams make sense if you only need one line, or if you would rather split the material across two shorter sittings of 100 items each. Either way, the testing mode is your choice: PSI offers both a test center and an online proctored option when you schedule, and the passing score of 70% correct does not change.
Time and Pacing
Time limits are 2 hours for the 100-item exams and 2.5 hours for the 150-item exam. Practice with the same rhythm: answer, check the explanation, and move on. Start with the Basics set, since that is the biggest block. If you want a reality check on difficulty, read how hard the exam is, and try the course preview.
