How Many Questions Are on the Virginia Life, Annuities & Health Exam? Format, Time Limit and Passing Score (2026)

5 min read|Updated 2026-10-23

The Short Answer

The combined Virginia Life, Annuities and Health exam (Prometric Series 11-01) has 150 questions: 140 scored and 10 pretest. You get 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of content time, and the fee is $35 per attempt.

Virginia also offers the two lines as separate exams: the Life and Annuities exam (Series 11-05) and the Health exam (Series 11-06). Each has 120 minutes of content time and costs $35 per attempt. Prometric's published documents do not itemise how many scored and pretest questions each single-line exam has, so we do not quote a count for them.

If you want both lines of authority, the combined exam costs $35 once. Taking the two single-line exams separately costs $35 each, $70 in total, so the combined exam is exactly half the price of the two-exam route. Pretest questions are trial items that do not count toward your result. Treat every question as if it counts, because you cannot tell which ones they are.

The Outline and Its Weights

The combined exam's 140 scored items are split across 16 sections. The weights and item counts below come from the Series 11-01 content outline:

1.0 Insurance Regulation10%14
2.0 General Insurance6%8
3.0 Life Insurance Basics6%8
4.0 Life Insurance Policies10%14

13.0 Group Health Insurance5%7
14.0 Dental Insurance1%2
15.0 Insurance for Senior Citizens and Special Needs Individuals11%15
16.0 Federal Tax Considerations for Health Insurance2%3

The items add up to exactly 140 and the weights to exactly 100%. Each section cites specific sections of the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code, so expect Virginia-specific questions across the exam, not only in the Regulation section.

The Passing Score

Prometric reports results as percentages, and the score report is built around that. This guide does not quote a numeric passing threshold, because we have not been able to confirm the exact figure in Prometric's Virginia Licensing Information Bulletin. Check the bulletin, and the Prometric Virginia FAQ it links to, before test day rather than relying on a number repeated on prep sites.

What matters for preparation: the result comes from scored items only, the 10 pretest questions do not count, and you cannot identify them. Answer every question and do not leave blanks.

Language and Time Accommodations

The exam is given in English only. Candidates for whom English is a second language may request up to time-and-one-half (150% of the normal time limit) by supplying a personal letter and a letter from an instructor or sponsoring company. Ask early; the bulletin describes the process.
