The Format in One Paragraph

The Pennsylvania Property and Casualty producer exam (PSI Series 16-06) has 150 scored questions and a 170-minute time limit. The passing score is 70% raw and the exam fee is $55. PSI also adds 5 to 10 unscored experimental questions, and the time to answer them is inside the 170 minutes.

Scored and Unscored Questions

Every candidate may see 5 to 10 experimental questions in addition to the 150 scored ones. They are trial items, they do not count toward your result, and you cannot tell them apart from the rest. The practical rule is simple: answer every question carefully, and do not let a question that seems to come from nowhere cost you time. It may be one of the unscored items.

What a 70% Raw Score Means

A raw score is the plain percentage of scored questions you answer correctly. It is not converted to a scale. To pass the combined exam you need 70% of the 150 scored questions right, and the unscored questions are not part of that calculation. Because nothing is scaled, a weak section cannot be hidden by a strong one beyond the points it actually earns, so coverage of the whole outline matters.

The Content Outline: Sections and Weights

The Series 16-06 outline lists the following sections, with the weight and the approximate number of items for each. The section numbers are printed as PSI lists them, so Businessowners appears as 14.0 even though it is listed before Workers' Compensation.

The weights add up to 100%. Pennsylvania law is not a separate section. It is woven through sections 1, 3, 4 to 9, 11 and 12, which is why Insurance Regulation, at 20%, is the biggest single block.

The Single-Line Exams

Pennsylvania also offers Property and Allied Lines (Series 16-04) and Casualty and Allied Lines (Series 16-05). Each has 100 scored questions, a 120-minute limit, a 70% raw pass mark and a $45 fee. PSI's bulletin says the combined exam "combines the content of the single-line examinations; you must pass the overall examination." The single-line exams carry almost no volume, 10 to 40 candidates a year, and this course prepares you for the combined exam.

What to Do With This

Use the weights to plan your time: start with Insurance Regulation and producer law, then the policy sections. If you want to know how the numbers translate into difficulty, read whether the exam is hard. For the day itself, see what to expect at PSI.
