Pennsylvania Property & Casualty Exam Day: What to Expect at PSI (2026)

6 min read|Updated 2026-10-23

Quick Overview

The Pennsylvania Property and Casualty exam is delivered by PSI. It has 150 scored multiple-choice questions, a 170-minute time limit and a pass mark of 70% raw. On top of the 150 scored questions you will see 5 to 10 unscored experimental questions, all within the same 170 minutes.

This guide walks through the day so that the logistics hold no surprises and your attention goes to the questions. Where PSI's own rules decide a detail, such as identification, we point you to the PSI Candidate Information Booklet for Pennsylvania (effective January 22, 2026) instead of guessing.

Booking Your Exam With PSI

You schedule the exam through PSI. The combined Property and Casualty exam is Series 16-06 and costs $55. Choose it rather than one of the single-line exams unless you have a specific reason: the combined exam covers both lines, while the Property-only and Casualty-only exams are $45 each and carry almost no volume. If you need to retake, next-day scheduling is available.

Test Center or Remote?

Both are available. In 2025, 1,500 of the 2,455 first-time candidates tested in person and 955 tested remotely. Neither route is easier. Pick the one that removes friction for you.

  • In person suits you if your home is noisy, your internet is unreliable, or you concentrate better away from home.
  • Remote suits you if travel is the obstacle and you can guarantee a quiet space for nearly three hours. Read PSI's remote requirements for the room and equipment well before the day, and test your setup then, not on the morning.

Identification and What to Bring

Identification rules are set by PSI, not by this course, so read the identification section of the current bulletin before exam day and follow it to the letter. As a general rule at any proctored exam, the name on your registration should match the name on your identification exactly, and a mismatch found at check-in can cost you the appointment and the fee. Resolve it before the day, not at the door.

Beyond identification, bring nothing you do not need. The exam is closed-book and the content is tested from what you know, so your preparation is the only thing you carry in.

Check-In and the Exam Itself

Arrive or log in early so that check-in does not eat into your focus. Once the exam starts, the 170 minutes cover everything, including the unscored items. A few habits make a difference:

  • Set a pace in sections. Check the clock at regular points rather than after every question.
  • Answer the sure questions first and do not spend several minutes on one. If you cannot decide, choose your best answer, mark it for review if the screen allows, and move on.
  • Read for the exact ask. Questions often name a specific form, coverage or rule and several options sound plausible. Look for words such as NOT, BEST and MOST LIKELY.
  • Do not chase unscored items. A question that seems to come from nowhere may be one of the 5 to 10 trial questions. Answer it and continue.
  • Use the outline. Insurance Regulation is 20% of the exam, so a question on producer duties or Pennsylvania statutes is worth getting right.

Language and Accommodations

The exam is offered in English only. Candidates whose first language is not English can receive time and a half when they supply a letter, so ask PSI about this when you book, not on the day.

Your Score and What Comes Next

You pass with 70% raw: the percentage of the 150 scored questions answered correctly, with no scaling. The unscored questions do not count. The bulletin describes how and when you receive your result, so check it before the day.

If you pass, you apply to the Pennsylvania Insurance Department for the resident producer license: the application fee is $55 plus an online service fee of about $12.50, and fingerprints are taken at IdentoGO. If you do not pass, you can rebook the next day, though it is worth reviewing your weak sections first.

Before the day, run a full timed practice session, use the free practice questions, and read how to pass on the first try. You can start with the free course preview tonight.
