4 min read|Updated 2026-10-28

The Short Answer

The combined Nevada Life and Health producer exam (exam code 05) has 159 items: 144 scored and 15 pretest. You have 3 hours 35 minutes, the exam fee is $47, and it is given at Pearson VUE test centers. The passing score is a scaled 70, which is not a raw percentage of correct answers.

Scored Versus Pretest Items

Pretest items are trial questions that do not count toward your result. On the combined exam each of the three sections carries five of them on top of its scored items (50 + 5, 50 + 5 and 44 + 5), which is how 144 scored items become 159 in total. Answer every item as if it counts.

What the 144 Scored Items Cover

Pearson VUE's content outline sets the weights. The Life-General section has 50 scored items:

  • Types of policies: 15
  • Life provisions, riders, options and exclusions: 15
  • Completing the application, underwriting and delivering the policies: 12
  • Retirement and other insurance concepts: 8

The Accident and Health-General section also has 50:

  • Types of policies: 16
  • Policy provisions, clauses and riders: 15
  • Social insurance (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security): 6
  • Other insurance concepts: 5
  • Field underwriting procedures: 8

The Nevada-specific section has 44, one state-law section covering both lines:

  • Statutes and codes common to all lines, including licensing, marketing and unfair trade practices, and the guaranty association: 20
  • Common to life and health only (credit, group, advertising): 4
  • Life only (replacement, disclosure, fraternals, the free look, viaticals): 6
  • Health only (mandatory clauses, mental health parity, reconstructive surgery, hospice care, Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage and Part D regulation, long-term care): 14

The outline is published in two editions, one effective through 13 November 2026 and one effective from 14 November 2026. Every item count above is the same in both.

The Passing Score Is Scaled

Nevada's administrative code (NAC 683A.270) requires a score of 70 or more on the licensing exam, and Pearson VUE's candidate handbook states that Nevada uses a scaled cut of 70 on a 0 to 100 scale. A scaled score is adjusted so that exam forms of different difficulty stay comparable. Because forms differ in difficulty, the same raw number of correct answers can pass on one form and fall short on another.

So do not translate the pass mark into a number of items you may miss. Aim to know the material across all three sections.

Single-Line Exams Versus the Combined Exam

Candidates who want both lines can take two single-line exams instead of the combined one. The Life exam (code 01) has 90 items, 80 of them scored, and runs 2 hours. The Health exam (code 02) has 98 items, 88 of them scored, and runs 2 hours 15 minutes. Each costs $37.

Two points matter. First, the single-line route costs $74 in exam fees against $47 for the combined exam. Second, each single-line exam carries its own Nevada section (30 and 38 scored items), so the two together have 168 scored items against 144 for the combined exam. The trade-off is that only the single-line exams can be taken online, with two online attempts allowed.

How LanePrep's Chapters Line Up

LanePrep's eight chapters add up to the same 144 scored items. Chapters 1, 7 and 8 are the Nevada law chapters (20 + 10 + 14 = 44), and chapters 2 to 6 cover the two general-knowledge sections. Chapters 2 to 8 each have a free 17-question practice set:
