Failed the Maryland Life & Health Exam? Retake Rules, Waiting Periods and Fees (2026)
The Short Answer
If you do not reach the 70% passing score on the Maryland Life, Accident & Health or Combo exam, you can book another attempt with Prometric. Each attempt carries the $62 exam fee, the same flat fee for any of the three exams. This guide only quotes the figures that Prometric and the Maryland Insurance Administration have published, so it does not state a waiting period or an attempt limit.
What a Retake Costs
| Exam | Fee per attempt |
|---|---|
| Life Producer (Series 20-27) | $62 |
| Accident and Health or Sickness Producer (Series 20-24) | $62 |
| Life and Accident & Health Combo (Series 20-30) | $62 |
The Spanish-language versions of the exams are listed at the same $62. If you failed a single-line exam and still need the other line, remember the Combo is a single $62 attempt for both lines, while two single-line exams are $62 each, or $124 together.
Waiting Periods, Attempt Limits and How Long a Pass Lasts
Check the current rules at booking time. A minimum wait before a re-sit, any cap on attempts, and the period for which a passing score stays valid are set by Prometric and the Maryland Insurance Administration, and this guide does not quote figures for them. The booking system shows the earliest date available to you, and the candidate information on the Prometric site for the Maryland Insurance Administration is the authority.
The practical advice does not depend on the exact number. Use the gap, however long it is, to study rather than to rebook as fast as you can. A rushed second attempt on the same preparation is the pattern to avoid, and a retake that follows a changed plan is the one worth paying $62 for.
Remote or In-Person
Prometric offers remote proctoring for Maryland insurance exams through its ProProctor platform, as well as testing at a center. The 2025 pass-rate data includes both in-person and remote candidates. The detailed eligibility rules for remote testing, including whether a retake can be taken remotely, are not something this guide can quote, so confirm them with Prometric before you pay.
Why Candidates Fail the First Time
The published pass rates show the pattern. In 2025 the first-time pass rate on the Life exam was 50.7%, on the Accident & Health exam 71.3%, and on the Combo 66.2%. The outline puts 30% of every exam in Insurance Regulation, and that is the block that national study material covers least. Read your score information, if you receive any, as a map of your weakest outline sections, and let it set the order of your restudy.
It also helps to be honest about the cause. A near miss on a 130-question Combo is usually spread across several sections. A clear miss is usually one or two big sections that were never really studied. The fix is different in each case, and the first is a matter of repetition while the second is a matter of coverage.
What to Do Differently the Second Time
- Do not retake on the same method. Rereading the same notes produces the same result. Switch to questions and let the answers decide what you restudy.
- Rank the outline by weight. Regulation first at 30%, then the largest remaining sections for your exam: Life Insurance Basics and Policy Provisions on the Life exam, Medical Plans and Health Insurance Basics on the Accident & Health exam.
- Work one set a day. The Maryland practice question hub has a 17-question set for each part of the outline. Review every wrong answer, then redo the set two days later.
- Rehearse the clock. Time yourself against 105 minutes for a single line or 150 minutes for the Combo.
- Consider the Combo if you still need both lines. One attempt at $62 covers both.
Your study plan is the one thing you control. Preview the Maryland course, or see why the exam is harder than it looks.
