The Quick Answer

Maryland gives Life and Health candidates a choice of three exams, all delivered by Prometric. The two single-line exams have 80 scored questions each and the Combo has 130 scored questions. Every exam also includes 10 unscored pretest questions, so you will actually see 90 or 140 items. The passing score is 70% or higher.

Scored and Unscored Questions

The pretest items are unscored questions the vendor is trying out for future exams. They are mixed in with the scored items and are not marked, so treat every question as if it counts. The outline weights below apply to the scored items only.

The Passing Score: 70%

Prometric's guidance for Maryland candidates says you must receive 70% or higher. It is stated as a plain percentage, not as a scaled score. Applied to the scored questions, that is the standard on each of the three exams.

Combo or Two Single-Line Exams?

Both routes lead to the same two lines of authority. The Combo costs $62 for one attempt. The two single-line exams cost $62 each, $124 in total, and mean two sittings. Add the $54 producer application fee and the all-in cost is $116 with the Combo or $178 with two exams. Whatever you choose, regulation is 30% of the outline, so it is the section to master first. Practice it with the Maryland Insurance Regulation question set.
