Maryland Life & Health Exam Day: What to Expect at Prometric (2026)
Quick Overview
Your Maryland Life and Health exam is delivered by Prometric. The Life and Accident & Health single-line exams each have 90 items (80 scored) and give you 1 hour 45 minutes. The Combo has 140 items (130 scored) and gives you 2 hours 30 minutes. You need 70% or higher to pass. This guide walks through the day so the logistics do not distract you from the questions.
Booking Your Exam
You register with Prometric for the exam you have chosen. The three English-language choices are the Life Producer exam (Series 20-27), the Accident and Health or Sickness Producer exam (Series 20-24) and the Combo (Series 20-30). Spanish-language versions of each also exist. The fee is $62 per attempt, whichever exam you pick.
Choose the Combo if you want both lines in one sitting. Choose a single-line exam if you only need one. Decide before you book, because the exams have different lengths.
Testing Center or Remote
Prometric offers both testing at a center and remote proctoring through its ProProctor platform. Candidate volumes in the 2025 pass-rate data include both in-person and remote sittings. This guide does not quote the technical or eligibility rules for remote testing; read the current Prometric instructions for your appointment before you choose it.
ID and What to Bring
Your appointment confirmation lists the identification Prometric requires for your appointment. Read it a few days ahead and check that the name on your ID matches the name you registered under. Leave study material, notes and phones out of the room unless the rules say otherwise.
Plan to arrive early for a center appointment, or to complete the remote check-in early if you test remotely, so a delay does not eat into your exam time.
Check-In and the Testing Room
Check-in happens before the clock starts. The proctor or system verifies your identity and explains the rules for the session. Use the time to settle. The exam clock covers the questions themselves, 105 minutes on a single-line exam and 150 minutes on the Combo.
The Screen and the Questions
Every item is multiple choice. General-knowledge and Maryland-specific content are mixed in a single outline, so a question on a Maryland reporting duty can follow a question on annuity payout options. Ten of the items are unscored pretest questions, and you cannot tell which, so answer every one carefully.
Pace yourself by sections, not minute by minute. Insurance Regulation is 30% of each exam, so expect it to be the largest group of questions.
- Read the last line of the question first to see whether it asks for the best, the most likely or the exception.
- Eliminate two options before choosing between the rest.
- Flag a difficult question and move on, then come back with the time you saved.
Your Score Report
The standard is 70% or higher. If you pass, the next step is the license application through NIPR, which carries a $54 fee; passing the exam does not itself make you licensed. If you do not pass, use the score information you receive to see which outline sections cost you the most, then read the retake guide.
The Night Before
- Confirm the date, time, location or remote instructions and ID.
- Do one short set of practice questions, such as the Maryland regulation set, then stop.
- Sleep. A rested candidate misreads fewer questions.
