Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Nevada Life & Health Exam? (2026)
The Short Answer
No. Nevada does not require a prelicensing course for the Life and Health producer exam or license. The Nevada Division of Insurance's own "Individual Producers" licensing page says, under "How to Apply for a License": "While prelicensing education is not required, individuals may choose to prepare for their licensing exam by taking a course of education in the fields of insurance for which they apply."
What the Division does require is a passed exam, an application with the state fee and, for resident applicants, fingerprints. Those are covered below.
What About the Course Rules in the Administrative Code?
Nevada's administrative code (NAC 683A.170 to 683A.261) also contains rules for Division-approved prelicensing courses. That framework sets out how courses are approved and taught. The Division's current public guidance, quoted above, is that taking one is a choice, and that is the statement LanePrep follows. If your situation is unusual, call the Division's licensing line at (775) 687-0700 before you spend money either way.
What You Do Need To Get Licensed
- Pass the exam. The combined Life and Health exam costs $47 at a Pearson VUE test center, and each single-line exam costs $37. The pass mark is a scaled 70.
- Apply within a year of passing. The exam must have been completed within 1 year immediately before your application date (NAC 683A.270).
- Pay the state license fee. It is $185: $125 under NRS 680B.010(5)(a) plus $60 under NRS 680C.110(4)(d). The vendor may charge transaction fees on top. Adding a line of authority later costs $50.
- Resident applicants: be fingerprinted. Fingerprints are taken after you submit the application (NRS 683A.251(3)), are valid for 1 year and must be taken by a Division-approved vendor. LiveScan digital is the standard method. A traditional ink card is accepted only for out-of-state applicants or when LiveScan prints are rejected, and it costs $40 paid to the Department of Public Safety. The Division's current page does not state a LiveScan total, so confirm the price with the vendor when you book.
- Nonresident producer applicants are not fingerprinted.
Once you are licensed, the license runs for 3 years, renewal is $185, and you complete 30 hours of continuing education per term, 3 of them in ethics, with no carryover of excess hours (NAC 683A.355(2)).
The Division's Individual Producers page lists every other application requirement, so check it for the current checklist. Our guide to what a Nevada license costs adds the numbers.
Should You Take a Course Anyway?
That is a choice about preparation, not about permission. The exam has 144 scored items across life, health and Nevada law, and NAIC's first-time pass rates for the combined exam were 54.8% in 2024 and 56.1% in 2025, so preparation matters. Some people learn best in a classroom and others prefer to study on their own schedule. The exam is the same either way, and what decides the result is how well you know the outline.
