How Many Questions Are on the Washington Life & Health Exam? Format, Time Limit and Passing Score (2026)

5 min read|Updated 2026-10-23

The Format at a Glance

Washington lets you choose between a combined exam and two separate single-line exams. All three are delivered by PSI, and all three use the same passing standard: you must get 70% correct to pass.

ExamItemsTime limitFee per attempt
Life Producer100150 minutes$38
Disability Producer100150 minutes$38
Life and Disability Producer Combo150195 minutes$55

The fees are from PSI's current candidate bulletin, which labels the content outlines as effective 4/1/2026.

Combined or Separate: The Cost Difference

Sitting the combined exam once costs $55. Sitting the Life and Disability exams separately costs $38 each, which is $76 in total, so the combined exam saves $21, or 28%. Candidates who want both lines of authority often take the combined exam for that reason. The trade-off is length: 195 minutes in one sitting against two shorter 150-minute sessions.

Scored and Unscored Items

PSI's bulletin says the exam contains non-scored questions that are used to develop future exams. Those questions are not scored, and time to answer them has been added to the time allowed. The bulletin does not print a separate count of these items, so we cannot tell you whether 100 and 150 are the number of scored items or the total number of items you will see. Treat every question as if it counts, because you cannot tell which ones do not.

The Combined Exam Outline

The Life and Disability outline has 13 sections, and PSI prints the number of items for each, which add up to the full 150:

SectionItems
1. Federal Laws and Regulations2
2. Washington Laws, Rules, and Regulations45
3. General Insurance Concepts10
4. Life, Accident and Health Insurance Basics16
5. Types of Life Insurance Policies12
6. Life Insurance Policy Provisions, Options, and Riders17
7. Annuities9
8. Individual Accident and Health Insurance Policy Provisions10
9. Disability Income and Related Insurance8
10. Medical Plans6
11. Group Health Insurance4
12. Health Insurance for Senior Citizens and Special Needs Individuals5
13. Federal Tax Considerations for Life and Health Insurance6

The Washington law section stands out. At 45 of 150 items it is 30% of the exam, and it is by far the largest block. Life Insurance Policy Provisions, Options, and Riders is the next largest at 17 items, followed by Life, Accident and Health Insurance Basics at 16. The health sections are individually small, but together they form a substantial part of the test.

The Single-Line Outlines

The Life Producer outline has 100 items across 8 sections, and the Disability Producer outline has 100 items across 10 sections. Each adds up exactly to 100, with no rounding. If you are only after one line of authority, study from the matching outline rather than the combined one.

What 70% Means for You

The bulletin states the passing requirement as a flat 70% correct and does not split it by exam or by in-person versus remote testing. We do not recommend working out a cut-off number to chase. Aim for comfortable scores well above 70% on fresh practice questions in every section, since a weak section is hard to offset on an exam this broad.
