Washington Life & Health Exam Day: What to Expect at PSI (2026)
Quick Overview
Washington's Life and Disability exams are delivered by PSI, either at a PSI test center or through PSI's remote online proctoring option. The combined exam has 150 items and a 195-minute time limit. The single-line Life and Disability exams have 100 items and 150 minutes each. You must get 70% correct to pass.
This guide walks through the process from booking to leaving the room, using PSI's current candidate information bulletin as the source. Read the bulletin itself before you book, since it is the authority on procedures.
Booking Your Appointment
You choose the exam and the format when you register: a test center or remote online proctoring. The fee is $38 for each single-line exam and $55 for the combined exam. Two booking rules matter:
- Cancel or reschedule at least 2 calendar days (48 hours) before the appointment, or you forfeit the fee.
- You cannot book a new appointment on the same day you tested. If you do not pass, you can retest as soon as a couple of days later, depending on availability.
Identification and What to Bring
PSI's bulletin has dedicated sections on what to bring, identification requirements and security procedures. We do not repeat them line by line here because they are the part most likely to change. Read those sections before the day, make sure the name on your registration matches your identification exactly, and plan to arrive early or, for remote testing, to be logged in and checked in with time to spare.
You do not need to be fingerprinted before you take the exam. Fingerprinting comes after you pass, as part of your license application.
Testing Remotely
Remote online proctoring is the option with the strictest rules, so read them closely:
- Breaks are not allowed. The bulletin says that if you cannot complete your examination without a break, you should not register for the remote option.
- A second camera device is required, such as a smartphone, as of the current bulletin.
- On the combined exam that means 195 minutes in your seat with no break, so decide honestly whether a test center suits you better.
During the Exam
The exam is multiple choice. Your examination contains non-scored questions, used to develop future exams, and you cannot tell which ones they are, so answer every question as if it counts. The time allowed already includes time to answer them.
Pace yourself. On the combined exam, 195 minutes for 150 items leaves room to think, but not to dwell. Answer what you know, mark what you do not, and return to it. The Washington law section is 45 of the 150 items, so do not rush through it.
Language Support
Candidates for whom English is a second language may request time and a half. The bulletin asks for a letter from your English instructor or sponsoring company, on letterhead. Arrange this before you register, not on the day.
After the Exam
Your result is judged against the 70% correct standard. If you pass, remember the deadline: submit all application requirements within 180 days, or you must retake the exam. The bulletin and your PSI account tell you how your result is delivered, so check there. If you do not pass, see our retake rules.

A Short Checklist
- Choose the exam that matches the lines of authority you want: Life, Disability or the combined exam.
- Decide between a test center and remote testing. If you choose remote, set up the second camera device in advance and plan for no breaks.
- Read PSI's candidate bulletin sections on identification, what to bring and security procedures.
- Put the cancellation deadline in your calendar: at least 2 calendar days before the appointment.
- If English is your second language and you want time and a half, arrange the letter before you register.
- Take at least one full-length practice session under timed conditions, so that 150 items in 195 minutes feels familiar.
- Line up your license application and, if you are a resident, your fingerprint appointment, so that you can finish inside the 180-day window after you pass.
