Texas Life & Health Insurance Exam — 3-Week Study Plan
The 3-Week Plan at a Glance
The plan is built around the actual weight of the exam: half the general-knowledge questions are life insurance, half are health insurance, and a full 30 scored questions are Texas statutes.
- Week 1: Life insurance (policy types, provisions and riders, annuities)
- Week 2: Health insurance + federal tax (individual and group health, social insurance, taxation)
- Week 3: Texas-specific statutes + full exam simulation + review
Daily Routine — What 1 Hour Looks Like
The daily hour splits into two distinct activities that use different parts of your brain and different slots of your day.
Audio Block: 30-45 minutes
Listen during time you already have but can't desk-study:
- Morning commute
- Workout / walking / running
- Cooking dinner
- Chores, yardwork
- Evening wind-down
This is passive intake. Your job is to listen with attention, not memorize. Repetition across days does the memorization work.
Practice Block: 15-30 minutes
This part requires a screen and focus. Do it:
- Lunch break
- After work, before dinner
- After kids are in bed
Run through 15-30 practice questions. Mark wrong answers for reread. This is active recall, where learning actually solidifies.
If you can only do one of the two blocks on a given day, pick practice. Questions teach more than lectures.
Week 1 — Life Insurance (Days 1-7)
The life side of the exam is 50 of the 100 general-knowledge questions: policy types (~15), riders/provisions/options/exclusions (~15), underwriting and policy delivery (~12), and retirement/tax concepts (~8). Chapters 1–4 cover it.
Days 1-2: Life Insurance Basics + Policy Types
- Audio focus: Chapters 1–2 — risk concepts, insurable interest, term vs. whole vs. universal vs. variable life, joint and survivorship policies
- Practice: 20 questions on policy type identification (e.g., which policy for a young family on a budget, which builds cash value)
Days 3-4: Provisions, Riders & Options
- Audio focus: Chapter 3 — incontestability, grace periods, reinstatement, waiver of premium, guaranteed insurability, accelerated benefits, settlement options, dividend options
- Practice: 20 questions; riders are heavily tested and the wording distinctions matter
Days 5-6: Annuities
- Audio focus: Chapter 4 — accumulation vs. annuitization phase, immediate vs. deferred, fixed vs. variable vs. indexed, payout options (life only, period certain, joint and survivor)
- Practice: 20 questions. Annuities are the most-missed life topic — give them full attention.
Day 7: Week 1 Review
- Re-quiz all of chapters 1–4; re-listen to sections behind your wrong answers. Goal: 70%+ everywhere before starting Week 2.
Week 2 — Health Insurance + Federal Tax (Days 8-14)
The health side is the other 50 general-knowledge questions: health policy types (~16), provisions/clauses/riders (~15), social insurance (~6), other concepts (~5), and field underwriting (~8). Federal tax questions thread through both sides.
Days 8-9: Federal Tax Considerations
- Audio focus: Chapter 5 — MECs and the 7-pay test, LIFO taxation, the age-59½ penalty, employer vs. individual deductibility, 1035 exchanges
- Practice: 20 questions with worked tax scenarios — do these on paper, not in your head
Days 10-11: Health Insurance Basics + Individual Policies
- Audio focus: Chapter 6 — major medical, deductibles/copays/coinsurance, disability income (elimination and benefit periods), LTC policies, renewability classes (noncancelable vs. guaranteed renewable)
- Practice: 25 questions with heavy focus on renewability and disability definitions (own-occ vs. any-occ)
Days 12-13: Group Health, Social Insurance & Federal Regulation
- Audio focus: Chapter 7 — group vs. individual underwriting, COBRA continuation, HIPAA portability, Medicare Parts A–D, Medicaid, Social Security disability
- Practice: 25 questions; Medicare part distinctions are near-guaranteed exam material
Day 14: Week 2 Review
- Re-quiz chapters 5–7. Target 70%+ before the statutes week.
Week 3 — Texas Statutes + Exam Prep (Days 15-21)
Thirty scored questions — nearly a quarter of your graded score — come from Texas statutes and rules. This is also the content national study materials cover worst, which is why it gets its own week.
Days 15-16: Texas Statutes — Common Provisions
- Audio focus: Chapter 7's Texas sections + Chapter 8 — TDI authority, agent licensing and CE (24 hours per 2 years including ethics), unfair trade practices, rebating limits (the $25 de minimis exception under §541.058(b)(7))
- Practice: 25 Texas-specific questions
Days 17-18: Texas Statutes — Life & Health Specific
- Audio focus: Chapter 8 — free-look periods (10 days standard, 30 days on replacement under §1114.053(e)), the two-year incontestability rule and the §705.104 fraud exception, insurable interest under Chapter 1103, replacement regulation, group conversion rights
- Practice: 25 questions Texas-specific — memorize the specific day-counts and dollar amounts
Day 19: Full-Length Practice Exam
- Do a full 145-question exam, timed at 150 minutes, seated, no notes. This is your dress rehearsal — treat it exactly like the real day.
Days 20-21: Targeted Review + Rest
- Review every wrong answer from the practice exam. Re-listen to the two weakest chapters. Day 21 is light: skim your notes, sleep well.
Exam Day Routine
The morning of your exam:
- Sleep 8 hours the night before. This matters more than the extra hour of review you'd squeeze in.
- Eat a normal breakfast. Don't experiment with new foods or unusual caffeine levels.
- Bring two forms of ID, one with photo and matching the name on your exam registration.
- Arrive 30 minutes early to your Pearson VUE testing center. Settle your nerves, use the restroom, don't rush.
- During the exam: flag hard questions and move on. Don't spend more than 90 seconds on any single question — you can return to flagged ones with leftover time.
- Use process of elimination. Even when you don't know the answer, ruling out two bad options doubles your guess odds.
You'll see your result immediately after submitting. Pass: apply for your license via TDI within a few days. Fail: get your diagnostic report, identify weak areas, and schedule the retake within 2 weeks while material is fresh.
Schedule Adjustments
The 3-week plan is a template, not a rulebook. Adjust based on your situation.
If You Have Less Than 1 Hour Per Day
Extend to 4 weeks. The audio portion is the flexible part — lengthen it if your commute is shorter. Don't compress practice time; cut audio time.
If You Have 2+ Hours Per Day
Compress to 2 weeks. Add a second practice block per day, especially for weeks 2 and 3. You'll hit diminishing returns above 2.5 hours daily; more isn't better.
If You're Already Familiar With Insurance
Compress to 1-1.5 weeks. Skim weeks 1-2 in a few days and spend most of your time on Texas statutes and practice exams. Industry veterans often underestimate how different Texas-specific content is.
If You Failed Once Already
Don't repeat the same plan. Look at your diagnostic report, identify the 2-3 weak content areas, and spend 80% of your time there. You already know the other material well enough — focus on the gaps.
