How Many Questions Are on the Massachusetts Life & Health Exam? Format, Time Limit and Passing Score (2026)

5 min read|Updated 2026-10-23

The Quick Answer

Massachusetts does not have one Life & Health exam. It has two separate exams: the Life Producer exam and the Accident, Health, or Sickness Producer exam. Each delivers 90 items, of which 80 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items. The exams are administered by Pearson VUE, in person, and each costs $37 per attempt.

The Format in Plain Words

Both exams share the same structure:

  • 50 scored general-knowledge questions, national content on the line you are testing for.
  • 30 scored Massachusetts-specific questions, state law and regulation.
  • 10 pretest questions, 5 in the general-knowledge portion and 5 in the Massachusetts portion, which do not count toward your score.

That is 90 items per exam. The general-knowledge outline and the Massachusetts-specific outline are published as separate documents, but you answer both in one sitting and they are scored together. There is no combined Life & Health exam. A candidate who wants both lines sits both exams, at $37 each, $74 in total.

The time allowed is shown on your Pearson VUE appointment confirmation, so check that rather than relying on a figure from a study site.

The Passing Score

The passing score is a scaled score of 70 on each exam. It is not 70 percent and it is not a number of correct answers. The candidate handbook states that the scaled score is neither the number of questions answered correctly nor the percentage answered correctly. That means you cannot count backwards from 80 and decide how many questions you can afford to miss.

You pass or fail each exam on its own. Passing the Life exam does not carry over to the Accident, Health, or Sickness exam, and the reverse is also true.

Scored and Unscored Questions

Ten of the 90 items on each exam are pretest questions that do not count toward your score. The 80 scored questions are what the weights above add up to. Because the exam does not tell you which items are which, treat every question as if it counts.

What to Do With This

Use the weights to decide your study order. Policy types and riders carry the most general-knowledge items on the Life exam, and the Massachusetts-specific part is 30 items on each exam, so it deserves its own study time.
