Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Utah Life & Health Exam? (2026)
The Short Answer
No. Utah does not require a pre-licensing course for the Life and Accident & Health producer license. Prometric's current Licensing Information Bulletin says so directly: the Utah Insurance Department does not require you to complete a training course before you take a Utah insurance examination, and you should use materials or education of your own choosing that you believe will best prepare you. The Department's own exam page says the same: Utah has no pre-licensing requirements for licensure, and the Department does not offer study materials or aids for the exams.
What the Law Says
The statute points the same way. Utah Code section 31A-23a-105(1)(b) lists what must be satisfied before a license is issued or renewed: application requirements, character requirements, continuing education, examination requirements, training period requirements, errors and omissions compliance, no disqualifying acts and fees. There is no pre-licensing education item in that list.
Section 31A-23a-203, the training period section, does not apply to Life or Accident and Health producers. It imposes experience or training conditions on only a few categories: surplus lines producers, consultants and producers who want to sell National Flood Insurance Program coverage. When the application asks about education, it means disclosing your educational background on the form, not completing a prescribed course.
What Is Required Instead
- Age and identity. You must be 18 or older, and the application asks for your identity details and personal history.
- Disclosures and certification. The application asks about any disqualifying acts and includes the errors and omissions certification.
- The exam. $32 for Life or for Accident and Health, or $44 for the combined exam, paid to Prometric.
- Fingerprints (residents). A $6.00 Prometric live-scan fee plus a $32.00 FBI and BCI fee, $38.00 in total. Non-residents are not fingerprinted.
- The license application. $75 for a resident individual producer license, submitted within 90 days of passing the exam.
As a planning figure, the combined exam path comes to $157 all-in: the exam, the $75 license fee and the $38 fingerprint cost. Taking two separate single-line exams instead comes to $177.
After You Are Licensed
A Utah license runs for 2 years on a birth-month renewal cycle. Continuing education is 24 credit hours per 2-year period, of which 3 hours must be ethics and at least half, 12 hours, must be classroom instruction. None of this is a pre-licensing duty. It starts after you hold the license.
