Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Oklahoma Life & Health Exam? (2026)

4 min read|Updated 2026-10-28

The Short Answer

No. Oklahoma does not require pre-licensing education for Life or Accident and Health or Sickness producer applicants. Oklahoma does not make a course a condition of sitting for the exam or of holding the license.

Two sources point the same way. The Oklahoma licensing statutes that could contain such a requirement, 36 O.S. §§1435.6 (examinations), 1435.7 (application requirements), 1435.8 (lines of authority, continuation and reinstatement), 1435.9, 1435.10 and 1435.12, require no course. And PSI's current Candidate Information Bulletin lists only age (18 or older) and citizenship or visa status as universal eligibility requirements. The one pre-licensing-hours rule in that bulletin, 16 hours, is for Bail Bondsman candidates, not for Life or Accident and Health or Sickness.

What Oklahoma Requires Instead

  • Age: 18 or older.
  • The exam: pass the PSI exam for the line you want (Life, Accident and Health or Sickness, or the combined exam) with 70% correct. The fee is $38 per attempt.
  • The license fee: the resident biennial producer license is $60 (36 O.S. §1435.23). With the exam fee, the minimum out of pocket is $98, apart from anything you spend on preparation.
  • A character standard: under 36 O.S. §1435.7(C) the applicant must be "competent, trustworthy, financially responsible, and of good personal and business reputation". That is a reputational standard, not a coursework requirement. The only background-related item on the Oklahoma Insurance Department's application page is the federal-felony "1033 waiver" process for applicants with a disqualifying conviction.
  • Timing: apply within two years after passing the exam (36 O.S. §1435.6(I)).

No fingerprints. The Oklahoma Insurance Department's application page lists a six-step process with no fingerprint step, and none of the licensing sections mentions fingerprinting or a vendor-run background check. There is no fingerprint fee to budget for.

A Note on Section Titles

Some summaries of Oklahoma law cite an old title for 36 O.S. §1435.29 that mentions prelicensing. Do not rely on a title. The current text of that section covers continuing education only: hours, exemptions, fees and provider rules. It contains no pre-licensing requirement.

Continuing Education After You Are Licensed

The coursework Oklahoma does require comes after the license. Under 36 O.S. §1435.29 and OAC 365:25-3-1, each producer completes 21 general clock hours plus 3 ethics clock hours, 24 in all, in each two-year period. At least 2 of the 21 general hours must be state or federal legislative updates; those 2 are part of the 21, not extra hours. Up to 6 excess hours carry forward to the next period, and the 24-month period begins the day after your license is granted.

Where LanePrep Fits

LanePrep is exam preparation, not a course Oklahoma requires. Whether you add a classroom course is your choice; Oklahoma does not make it a condition of the exam.
