Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Alabama Life & Health Exam? (2026)
The Short Answer: No
You do not need a pre-licensing course to take the Alabama Life or Health exam or to get licensed. Alabama removed the requirement effective January 1, 2024. There is no required classroom-hour count and no completion certificate for either line of authority, and no alternative pathway that still requires one.
The source is the law itself. House Bill 60 of the 2023 Regular Session was signed by the Governor on May 3, 2023 and became Act No. 2023-104. Its stated purpose is to delete the requirement for insurance producers to complete a prelicensing course of study approved by the Commissioner. The University of Alabama's testing page confirms it in plain words: as of January 1, 2024, the state no longer requires a prelicensing certificate.
What Alabama Requires Instead
After the change, the qualifications in Code of Alabama section 27-7-5(a) come down to four things:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have not committed an act that disqualifies you under section 27-7-19.
- You have passed the examination for the line or lines of authority you are applying for.
- You have paid the required fees under section 27-4-2.
The exam is therefore the gate. Passing it is the one thing you must demonstrate, and how you prepare is up to you.
Fingerprints, Fees and Citizenship Proof
Alongside the exam, plan for these steps and costs:
- Exam fee: $75 for the combined Life & Health exam, or $50 for each single-line exam.
- License fee: $80 for the individual producer license, plus a $5 NIPR transaction fee. The license fee is not charged per line of authority, but you should request every line you want on your initial application, because adding one later needs a new filing with additional fees.
- Fingerprints: resident applicants must complete a fingerprint-based background check through Fieldprint, the department's authorized vendor. The department's page describes the process but does not state a dollar amount, so check the current price with Fieldprint before you go. Results are valid for 30 days, so get fingerprinted after you pass and shortly before you apply.
- Proof of citizenship: under the Beason-Hammon Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, every applicant must provide proof of citizenship. If the documents do not arrive within 10 days, the application is rejected and the fees already paid are not refunded.
Your exam certificate is valid for one year from the date you complete the exam, so sequence these steps with that in mind.
Where LanePrep Fits
LanePrep is exam preparation, not a mandated course. Nothing about the Alabama licensing process requires you to buy it or any other course. What it offers is audio lessons you can listen to while commuting and practice questions that match the exam's four parts, so you can find out where you are weak before paying a $75 exam fee.
That matters more now that there is no required course. Without a classroom to force the pace, the people who do best are usually those who set a schedule and test themselves regularly. Try the free Alabama Life & Health preview, see what the exam covers, and read how hard it is.
