How Many Questions Are on the Alabama Life & Health Exam? Format, Time Limit and Passing Score (2026)

The Format at a Glance

Alabama offers three producer exams for this line of authority, and you choose which one to sit. All three are multiple choice with four answer options per question, administered by the University of Alabama's Continuing Education Lifelong Learning program (CELL) for the Alabama Department of Insurance.

ExamQuestionsTime limitCorrect to passFee
Combined Life & Health150180 minutes105 (70%)$75
Life only125150 minutes87$50
Health only100120 minutes70 (70%)$50

The same figures appear on the CELL testing page and in the department's own content outline, so they are consistent in both official places.

The Passing Score

The passing score is a raw number of correct answers, not a scaled score. On the combined exam you need 105 of 150, exactly 70%. On the Health-only exam you need 70 of 100, also exactly 70%. On the Life-only exam the minimum is 87 of 125, which works out to 69.6% and is printed as 70%. In practice that means you cannot miss more than 38 on the Life-only exam.

Because the line is flat, there is no way to read a harder or easier version of the exam into your result. Count your correct answers, and you know where you stand.

One honest caveat: the official materials we reviewed say nothing about unscored or experimental questions. They do not say there are any, and they do not say there are none. The safest plan is to treat every question as if it counts.

What Is on the Combined Exam

The department's content outline divides the exam into four parts. The table gives the number of questions from each part on each exam.

I. General Life and Health Insurance302721
II. Life Insurance55800
III. Health Insurance45063
IV. Alabama Insurance Law201816

Part I covers the purpose of insurance, contract law, underwriting and the application. Part II covers traditional and flexible life policies, policy provisions, options and riders, annuities and retirement plans, business and group life, and Social Security. Part III covers health foundations, medical expense, disability income, the uniform individual health policy provisions law, group health, Medicare and Medicaid, and limited health policies.

The Alabama Law Section

Part IV is split into three sub-parts. The first, for all licensing candidates, covers the Insurance Commissioner's powers, obtaining and maintaining a license, continuing education, appointment and termination of producers, unfair trade practices and the Domestic Abuse Protection Act. This is the only sub-part that appears on every exam variant.

Life candidates are also tested on policy approval and required provisions, advertising, solicitations and illustrations, life and annuity replacement, annuity suitability, minors and insurance, and the Alabama Life and Disability Insurance Guaranty Association. Health candidates are tested on individual accident and health policies, HMOs, Medicare Supplement and long-term care.

The department's outline lists topic names only. It does not attach Code of Alabama section numbers to each topic, so be wary of any study material that claims to tell you exactly which statute each question comes from.

Which Exam Should You Take?

If you want both lines of authority, the combined exam costs $75 against $100 for two separate exams, and you sit once instead of twice. It is also the longest, and a failure carries consequences for the single-line exams, which our retake rules guide explains.

Choose a single-line exam only if you are sure you want just that line. Alabama's license fee is not charged per line, but you should select every line you want on your initial application, because adding one later means a new filing with its own fees.

Whichever you pick, the content is the same material, and our exam day guide shows what the session looks like. Try the free course preview to see how LanePrep covers each part, and read how hard the exam really is.
