Pennsylvania Life & Health Exam Day: What to Expect at PSI (2026)
The Short Answer
The Pennsylvania Life, Accident and Health exam is delivered by PSI, either at a test center or by remote proctoring. You face 150 scored questions plus 5-10 unscored experimental items in 170 minutes, and you need 70% correct to pass. Your PSI confirmation and the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin for Pennsylvania are the authority on identification, check-in and conduct rules; this page tells you what to expect around them.
Booking
You schedule with PSI. The exam fee is $55 per attempt for the combined exam (Series 16-03). You can sit at a test center or by remote proctoring. Pick the format you will be calm in: a quiet, familiar room suits some people, while a test center removes the risk of a home internet or camera problem for others.
The exam is in English only. Candidates for whom English is a second language can receive time and a half, but that needs a letter, so arrange it before you book rather than on the day.
Before the Day
Read the current PSI bulletin for Pennsylvania. It sets out the identification you must present and the rules for what you may bring, and those details are not something to rely on memory or a forum post for. Read your confirmation message the day before, check your start time and sort the identification out in advance.
Do not try to learn new material the night before. Review the highest-weighted sections lightly, sleep, and eat. Insurance Regulation (21%) is the one to skim last, since its statutes are easy to blur.
Check-In and the Exam Screen
Give check-in more time than you think you need, because that is where avoidable problems surface. Follow the PSI instructions for your format, whether you are at a test center or in a remote session, and do not improvise.
The exam is computer-based. Expect questions presented on screen with a clock, and read the PSI on-screen instructions carefully for how to move between questions and mark them for review. Settle in before the first question rather than rushing it.
What to Bring in Your Head
Beyond identification and your confirmation, the thing you carry in is a method. Decide in advance how you will read a question: find what is being asked, eliminate the two weakest options, then choose between the remaining two on the rule. Decide how you will treat a question you cannot place: answer, mark, move on. Candidates who have a method spend less of the 170 minutes wondering what to do and more of it answering.
Know the high-weight ideas cold: the regulation and producer rules, policy provisions, and the health and senior products. Pennsylvania law is woven through several sections, so expect a state rule to be the deciding fact in questions that look generic.
Pacing Your 170 Minutes
- Answer everything. You cannot tell which 5-10 items are unscored, so none can be skipped as if it did not matter.
- Do not stall. If a question has you stuck, give your best answer, mark it for review if the interface allows, and move on.
- Read the question stem twice. Replacement, rebating, fiduciary and policy-provision questions often turn on one word.
- Leave a review window. Use spare time to revisit marked questions rather than rereading everything.
The pass mark is a raw 70% of the scored questions, so you can miss a good number and still pass. Do not let one hard cluster rattle you.
After the Exam
If you pass, the next steps are the license application ($55, plus an online service fee of about $12.50) and fingerprinting through IdentoGO, whose fee is paid at the center. If you do not pass, retakes are unlimited and can be booked for the next day at $55 per attempt; see the retake rules.
To rehearse the real conditions, run a long mixed set in one sitting. The course preview and the free practice questions are a good start, and the format page has the section weights.
