The Short Answer

Each North Carolina Property & Casualty exam has 55 scored questions and up to 5 unscored pretest questions. You have 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes), and the two parts are scored together. You pass with a scaled score of 70 on a 0-100 scale. The fee is $45 per attempt, and both exams are delivered by Pearson VUE in English only.

The P&C license needs both exams. There is no combined exam. The separate Personal Lines Agent exam (code 12, 80 scored questions) belongs to a smaller license line and is not part of the P&C license.

Scored and Unscored Questions

The pretest questions are items under evaluation. They do not count toward your score, but they are not marked on screen, so you should answer every question as if it counts. Your result is based on the 55 scored questions only.

The Outline Sections and Their Weights

Both exams follow content outlines #123415, effective 2026-03-02. The Property Agent outline:

SectionScored items
I. Terms and Concepts7
II. Personal Insurance Coverages25
III. Commercial Insurance Coverages10
IV. North Carolina Statutes and Regulations Pertinent to Property Insurance13

The Casualty Agent outline:

SectionScored items
I. Terms and Concepts7
II. Personal Insurance Coverages18
III. Commercial Insurance Coverages15
IV. North Carolina Statutes and Regulations Pertinent to Casualty Insurance15

Read the weights as a study budget. The Property exam is built around personal coverages, so homeowners, dwelling and flood forms deserve most of your hours. The Casualty exam is more balanced and gives the statutes section its largest share.

What the Passing Score Means

The standard is a scaled score of 70, not a raw count of correct answers. A scaled score converts your performance into a common 0-100 scale, so you should not assume that 70 means 70 percent of the items. LanePrep does not state a raw-score cut because the candidate materials do not publish one. Plan to be comfortably strong in every section instead of aiming at a minimum.

The North Carolina Law Sections

Section IV is where the two exams differ most. Property candidates are tested on Article 36 (the North Carolina Rate Bureau), Article 43 (general business regulations), Article 44 (fire insurance policies), Article 45 (the Beach Plan), Article 46 (the FAIR Plan) and Article 48 (the Insurance Guaranty Association). Casualty candidates are tested on Article 36, Article 37 (the Motor Vehicle Reinsurance Facility), Article 48, G.S. 20-279.21, G.S. 20-310 and the Workers' Compensation Act in G.S. Chapter 97.

Both exams also cover shared law: the insurance contract in G.S. 58-1-10, the Commissioner's powers, licensing in Article 33, the Insurance Information and Privacy Protection Act in Article 39, unauthorized insurers in Article 28 and Unfair Trade Practices in Article 63.
