Do You Need a Pre-Licensing Course for the Iowa Life & Health Exam? (2026)

4 min read|Updated 2026-10-29

The Short Answer

No. Iowa does not require a pre-licensing course, classroom hours or any approved education before you sit the Life or the Accident & Health producer exam, or to hold either license. That is not a waiver or a loophole. Iowa's statute and rules never impose the requirement in the first place, so any training an agency asks of you is the agency's policy, not an Iowa licensing condition.

Where the Requirement Would Be, and Isn't

Iowa Code 522B.4 and 522B.5 list the conditions for a resident producer license, and IAC 191-10.4(1) repeats them almost word for word. Education is not among them. The rest of chapter 522B and of IAC chapter 191-10 likewise contain no pre-licensing education provision, no approved-course framework and no classroom-hour minimum; the only education language in either concerns continuing education after licensing.

Pearson VUE's Candidate Handbook agrees. It sums up the path in three steps (reserve and pay, take the exam, apply for the license), and none of them is a course.

What Iowa Requires Instead

  • Age: at least 18.
  • The exam: pass the Pearson VUE exam for each line you want, Life (12-IA-01), Accident & Health (12-IA-02) or both, at $44 each. A pass is valid for 90 days.
  • The license fee: $50 for a three-year term. The term is tied to your birth month rather than a fixed calendar date (IAC 191-10.6(1)).
  • Character and competence: no disqualifying act under Iowa Code 522B.11, and the "requisite character and competence" the statute requires.
  • Fingerprints: a fingerprint-based criminal history check for an initial resident license, done through Fieldprint after you submit the NIPR application. Your application confirmation contains the code you use to book. The Division's FAQ lists the Fieldprint appointment fee as $37.35 at an Iowa location and $39.35 outside Iowa; confirm the current charges before you book.

The Order Things Happen In

  1. Reserve your exam with Pearson VUE and pay the $44 fee.
  2. Take the exam, at a test center or online.
  3. Apply for the license within 90 days of passing, through NIPR.
  4. Book fingerprinting through Fieldprint using the code in your application confirmation.

Renewing on time does not mean fingerprints again: the Division's FAQ says only producers seeking reissuance after a revocation or suspension must repeat the criminal history check.

The Education That Does Exist

Iowa's education requirement comes after you are licensed: 36 hours of Division-approved continuing education in each three-year term, 3 of them in ethics, with no carryover of excess hours (IAC 191-11.3(1) and (3)). It is not a gate to the exam.

Where LanePrep Fits

LanePrep is exam preparation, not a course the state requires or approves for licensing, and nothing in Iowa's process asks you for a course certificate. What it offers is preparation for the two exams: audio lessons you can play on a commute and practice questions organized by the sections of Pearson VUE's outline, for Life, for Accident & Health or both.
